Rotary Relays will be March 17 – we need 80 volunteers and we will need each person to fill out a form in advance of the event.
Bell Ringers had a good showing and we raised $1230.80 for the Salvation Army.
THERE IS NO MEETING NEXT WEEK AND WILL ALSO BE DARK ON 1/2/18.
Each of the last 2 RI conventions has had anti-slavery speakers at the most prominent stages.
There are significant projects being completed by Rotarians throughout the US. A Safehouse being built in Vegas, a District Conference dedicated to the topic, airings of the movie ‘I am Jane Doe’ (which would be good to watch if you want to learn more).
GenerationFreedom.com by United Way is a great resource for learning about organizations working on this issue and as potential Global Grant collaborations.
Out of the Atlanta Convention, there is an effort underway to connect Rotarians working on this issue.
The Rotary Action Group Against Slavery is a good group to be involved in if this is a point of interest.
The most important things we can do is to work on providing a safety net for Foster kids, like CASA, Every Child, and Safe Families would be good to check out.

Next Tuesday December 19th will be our last meeting of the year for the club, and we would like to show some appreciation and spread some Holiday Cheer to the country club staff who set up and serve us week after week throughout the year.
Please consider bringing some pocket money to put in the baskets on the tables at next Tuesday’s meeting as a token of our appreciation for their hard work.

On January 13th, the North Medford High School and Debate Team is hosting a Speech and Debate Tournament in which high school competitors across the state will participate in several speaking and debate events.
They are in need of judges to evaluate these high school students and would welcome all community members with wide ranges of experience.

It is that time of year again. This will be the earliest we have held the track meet. We need around 80 volunteers to measure, time, rake, retrieve and other miscellaneous jobs . Since our club isn’t that big, this is one event that requires participation by every able bodied member. Please plan on participating. Although a few volunteers work the full day, most of these jobs last around 3 or 4 hours. We encourage Rotarians to invite family members to help as well. So if you and a family member, or friend are willing to help, please email or call Mark Chirgwin chirgwinm@stifel.com or 541-941-1749 to let him know so he can put your name on the schedule. Every volunteer needs to complete the attached VIM form once a year, so we can determine whether you are up to date on your criminal background check. Please return those VIMS forms to Mark, so he can check you off the list. If you do need a background check, they are now completed on line, and are quick and easy.
This is a fun event. We hope to see you there.

Lori Williams, Finance Officer for the Medford Senior Center and Bev Power, Recreation Supervisor for the Medford Senior Center joined our club on 11/21 to discuss the Medford Senior Center.
The Medford Senior Center has been a self-supporting agency since its inception in the 50’s. Unlike other senior centers in the Rogue Valley, the building is owned and operated by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board is working to redefine what is a “senior”, what they need, what can they can provide.
They are currently able to provide the following activities:
They wanted to make sure everyone knows that:
Starting January 1, 2018, China plans to ban imports of 24 varieties of solid waste and recyclables, this includes waste paper and certain plastics, says Garry Penning with Rogue Disposal and Recycling. Garry is the Director of Gov. Affairs & Marketing for Rogue Disposal and was introduced by Mike Jacobson as the guest speaker at the November 14 Rotary meeting.
News of China’s decision is causing concern everywhere, not just southern Oregon. China is focusing on cleaning up its environment, which is a good thing. However, the mills that previously accepted contaminated materials are being shut down, which means new quality standards and a reduction in contamination to .3%. We currently can be around 20% contaminated. Contamination could be as simple as a piece of clothing or a garden hose that is included with recyclable materials.
The price is dropping rapidly to market recyclable materials leaving Rogue Disposal & Recycling with two choices: 1) Raise prices 2) Plastics and mixed paper become trash. At the moment, Rogue Disposal and Recycling is pursuing the option with DEQ to landfill materials that cannot be marketing. This is a short-term solution.
