Dear Rotarian,
A river upside down. The Klamath River. Most rivers begin in the mountains, flow into farmland, and end up in a heavily industrialized urban port. The Klamath River on the other hand, starts in farmland draining from Upper Klamath Lake and flows through mountains and becomes wilder as it gets closer to an estuary at the mouth of the Pacific Ocean 20 miles south of Crescent City.
California’s second-largest river has sustained Native American tribes with plentiful salmon for millennia, provided upstream farmers with irrigation water for generations and served as a haven for retirees who built dream homes along its banks.
The largest dam removal project in U.S. history is about to happen in our own backyard with the 4 lower hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River slated to be removed. This project is not without controversy. What will happen to the farmland and irrigation once the dams are removed? What will happen with the salmon? Will this be the project that sets the standard for other similar projects across the country? Will the demolition of the dams remove a symbolic barrier between the upriver and downriver human communities?
Please join me this Tuesday for an update on the project and potential water deficits this year for our region. Our own Larry Nicholson will provide the inside scoop! It will be a program you won’t want to miss! I saved your favorite seat in the house and the best viewing option! It’s up to you to have your favorite lunch on hand! It is a great time for some virtual Rotary fellowship! If you haven’t participated during the COVID Crisis, give it a try! We miss you!
