I often wonder about the serendipitous occurrences in my life. Are they random, am I subconsciously willing things to happen with my force of mind, or is there a bigger force in the Universe as an explanation? Is it because of the two 4-leaf-clovers I have found, and just plain luck? I am in the camp of “there is no such thing as a coincidence” so up to this point I simply marvel and am in awe (and thankful) at the wonders this life has provided. As Henry James once put it, you have to have an “openness to the chances of life.”
The coining of the term serendipity is attributed to Horace Walpole, who derived it from the title of a fairy tale, “The Three Princes of Serendip” about three heroes “always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of.” This week we have the pleasure of having Dr. Chad Thatcher share the science behind maximizing serendipity into our lives. Please join your fellow Rotarians in an afternoon of fellowship. In my mind, this is one program not to miss!
From a Rotary perspective, think of what can be accomplished and the connections made if we were more aware of serendipity in the air!
Yours in Rotary Service,
