Dear Rotarian,
Did you know the city of Chicago was where both Rotary and AGC had their beginnings? It was in 1905 when lawyer Paul Harris and three friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago and formed a club in the spirit of friendliness, they had known in their hometowns. This was the humble beginnings of Rotary as we know it today. In the fall of 1918, a group of men met in Chicago and formed the Associated General Contractors of America, a trade association for the construction industry. It was formed to address problems identified during World War I.
Both Rotary and AGC have grown significantly over the last century. Rotary has around 1.2 million professional men and women belonging to more than 30,000 clubs worldwide while AGC represents over 6,500 of America’s general contractors, and over 9,000 specialty-contracting firms. More than 10,500 service providers and suppliers are also associated with AGC, through a nationwide network of chapters. Impressive!
