Dear Rotarian
Hopelessness is a real thing. I have witnessed it and you have likely witnessed it too. Being a “glass half FULL” kind of person, it is hard to understand the utter despair that is felt by those afflicted with depression and suicidal thoughts. Suicide is a global public health problem and according to the World Health Organization, one person dies every 40 seconds as a result of committing suicide (Sept. 2019 figures).
This week we will hear KOBI TV General Manager Bob Wise, and Blakely McHugh talk about why the stigma surrounding suicide is still rampant and ways the media can help break down that stigma. We, as Rotarians and a community can also learn ways in which we can help prevent the hopelessness that leads many down the path to suicide.
Please join me this Tuesday to learn more about this important topic. Openness and awareness are keys to suicide prevention and the information provided at this week’s meeting can ultimately save a life.
