Dear Rotarian,
Did you know that Amazon is just months away from delivering orders with its all-electric Prime Air Drone?? Or that the future has in store unmanned flying taxis?? This really piqued my curiosity on the subject so I did a little research.
The word “drone” refers to any aerial vehicle that is unmanned. By this definition, the earliest unmanned aerial vehicle in the history of drones was seen in 1839, when Austrian soldiers attacked the city of Venice with unmanned balloons filled with explosives.
Some of these Austrian Balloons were successful, but a number of them blew back and bombed the Austrians’ own lines, so the practice did not become widely adopted.
Now, drones are used in many capacities from recreational to military to commercial use. One of my first aha moments of drone use in law enforcement was in reading the 2017 mystery thriller novel Origins by Dan Brown where Robert Langdon was being chased by a drone!
At this week’s meeting, we have the pleasure of hearing Mark Unger’s presentation on “Drone Use in Search & Rescue and Law Enforcement.” Mark will be introduced by Bud Clardy.
Please call on a fellow Rotarian you haven’t seen in a while and invite them to join you at this week’s meeting! It is good to bring our Rotary family together!!
Yours in Rotary Service,
Michelle Corradetti, President
