Passing the Baton: Thank you, Cindi, Welcome Gerry!!
By Judy Corwin
Every year, since Paul Harris founded Rotary in 1905, leadership transitions on July 1 when the baton is passed from one Club President to another and one District Governor to another. Each are committed and passionate about carrying the baton over the finish line. On June 24, the District baton was passed between District Governor Cindi O’Neil and District Governor Elect Gerry Kosanovic.
DGE Gerry challenged Rotarians to “step up to the plate and take our turn to lead” and he thanked DGE Cindi for “hitting a home run,” during a most-challenging year of COVID, Zoom meetings, Rotary Now, and more. For DG Cindi it was a “year of opportunities.”
Rural Clinic Rebounding Through Rotary
By DG Cindi O’Neil
The McKenzie Valley Wellness Center was lost during the Holiday Farm Fire in September 2020. Wellness medical services are now performed in an old RV and a makeshift quilt shop turned temporary wellness clinic between Blue River and McKenzie Bridge, Oregon.
This rural clinic is essential to those still living and rebuilding their lives in the valley. The long-term plans are to rebuild the wellness center in Blue River. In the meantime, through a District Grant, Rotary is able to purchase $13,500 worth of medical equipment to help the facility function properly.
Exam tables, provider chairs, blood draw chair, and a medical grade refrigerator for future flu season vaccines are among the things desperately needed to equip the wellness center. All the equipment will eventually be transferred to the future wellness clinic which McKenzie Valley Wellness hopes to complete in 2022. For more detail and the thank yous to a lot of great Rotary leadership involved, click here.
The Power of Rotary: Global Opportunities for our Youth
By Debbie Snow
Three months ago, the Southern CA Interact Clubs started a pen pal initiative with several districts across the United States. South Eugene High School (SEHS) Interact students decided to join.
The incoming Interact Co-president of SEHS developed a strong relationship with his pen pal – a young lady from India. He invited her to one of our Interact meetings (via zoom) so we had the pleasure of meeting her, albeit it 3:00 am in the morning for her.
The students had so much fun meeting each other! The two board of directors decided to meet again on a weekend day to share project ideas and learn more about Interact around the world. One program that SEHS students have accomplished in the last year was their online tutoring program to help out with the challenges of learning on line in a pandemic. The students from India loved the tutoring idea so much they took it to their school district for approval (big process) and it was just approved! So, now, the SEHS tutoring program is active in three countries – India, Canada and the United States! The beauty for me was to watch the students witness the Power of Rotary.

This summer 100 children who lost their homes in the Holiday Farm Fire will receive a special treat: a week-long summer camp designed to help them heal from the trauma of the fire. The District 5110 Fire Relief Fund is funding one of the camps and United Way of Lane county is funding another.
Together the partnership funds $50,000 worth of renewed resiliency in young children. Monica Wilton of the Rotary Club of Eugene spearheaded the project with Lane County Health and Human Services, Supervisor of “Lane Care Program,” Lucy Zammarelli.
