International Speaker Series Continues Tonight, ThursdayBy Heather Edwards 1. All are welcome to join us in Eugene or online tonight at 6 pm Pacific to meet Dr. Julia Phillips (pictured). This Yale grad and materials physicist is also a Presidential appointee to the National Science Foundation Board of Directors. She’ll be sharing with us how the NSF impacts our lives and we are so looking forward to her decades of experience and insight. A special thank you to our Port Orfordtarian friend David Bassett for connecting us to such an accomplished scientist! 2. Speaking of Port Orford, we only have three more weeks of our International Speakers Series in partnership with our friends at the coast! Keep traveling the world with us this Thursday, May 19th at 12 pm Pacific. We’re going to Romania this week – please join us and our new friend, Rotarian Dacian Coita. Some of you met him earlier this month when he joined us at 4 am his time (wow!) and we’ll be delighted to welcome his daughter for her study abroad in Oregon next year. He will be sharing what his club and others are doing in Romania to help Ukrainians. People of Action! |

Assorted Levity for Your Rotary Week/LifeBy Mike Corwin Amusing but authentic words to add to your vocabulary (or not): Smaze: Don’t mistake this for Tyra Banks’ coined word “smize.” A “smaze” is what you get when there is a combination of smoke and haze. Blubber: This word refers to a thick layer of fat. Skirl: A loud, wailing sound that bagpipes make. Who knew? Adorbs: A cute and shortened form of the word “adorable.” Waesucks: Instead of “alas!” you can say this goofy word. Widdershins: A funny word that means something is moving in the wrong direction/counter-clockwise. |
