This is the first in our speaker series for the D5110 Celebration in Corvallis on April 28-30–meet John Mathers.

Climate change is an unprecedented challenge to humankind. CO2 in the atmosphere is changing our planet, no matter what or who may be the cause. It is that simple. And there is no fixing it later, due to the long life of CO2 in the atmosphere and oceans. The world’s least prepared and most vulnerable
are those that will be impacted the greatest. These are the same people Rotary has devoted its services to over the last century. Many years ago, an individual Rotary club saw a need and took action to begin the eradication of polio. The same grassroots effort is necessary to tackle climate change. We must act now to prevent it from getting even hotter, disrupting our weather and raising sea levels.

Rotary can take a leadership role. If not Rotarians, then who? If not here, then where? If not right now,

Registration for a great Rotary 5110 Celebration in Corvallis is underway and anyone who wants to start it off with a Rotary round of golf at Oregon State University’s golf course, Trysting Tree, should take advantage of the Rotary Scramble planned for Thursday, April 28.

The cost is $125 a player or $500 for a foursome and includes green fee, golf cart and BBQ Buffet Lunch.

Without daily reading practice, children can lose up to three months of literacy skills over the summer. In the aftermath of school closings and decreased access to summer learning programs, children are at a higher risk of losing reading skills than ever before. However, reading at least 20 minutes a day can significantly boost vocabulary and prevent learning loss.

To keep children in rural America learning this summer, Save the Children is hosting a 100 Days of Reading challenge. What is the 100 Days of Reading Challenge?

Save the Children challenges children and families to read at least 20 minutes every day from June 1 – September 8. To help, Save the Children is providing partners with resources, tools, and funding to support a local reading challenge in their community as a fun way to encourage reading all summer long. When does it start? The 100 Days of Reading Challenge starts June 1 and will run through September 8 (World Literacy Day) What do challenge hosts need to do? Rotary Clubs are reminded to create a basket of goodies from your local community for the Basket Auction at the District 5110 Celebration Conference, April 28-30, in Corvallis, OR.

Proceeds from baskets will be donated to the Rotary Foundation.

Since we are asking to go back to 2019, this may be a long but worthwhile presentation. Reverend Dan Fowler has stepped up to support a memorial display at the Celebration with a PowerPoint presentation.
