March is Red Cross Month. For patients in the emergency room, fighting cancer or facing a life-threatening illness, help can’t wait. Healthy donors are needed now to help ensure that patients have lifesaving blood products available for emergency and everyday medical treatments. The Red Cross is testing blood donations for COVID-19 antibodies. As part of this effort, plasma from standard blood donations that test positive for COVID-19 antibodies may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime.
