What started as a generous donation from the City of Ashland has traveled more than a thousand miles to begin a new chapter of service in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Through the efforts of the Rotary Club of Medford and dedicated Rotarians who helped navigate the many details involved, a retired ambulance from the City of Ashland was acquired and donated for continued service in the Cabo community.
Getting an ambulance from Southern Oregon to Mexico is no small undertaking. Rotarians worked together to identify an opportunity where the vehicle could continue doing what it was built to do—help people. After plenty of planning, coordination, paperwork, logistics, and miles on the road, the ambulance successfully crossed the border and arrived in Cabo.
And it even got a new look along the way!
Now repainted and ready to roll, the ambulance will continue its life in service to others rather than being retired or sold. It’s a wonderful example of Rotary at its best: seeing the potential in an available resource, bringing people together, and turning that opportunity into something that can make a meaningful difference.
The project also created an unexpected ripple of good. $3,000 received through the ambulance donation was directed to a nonprofit serving children in the Cabo area, helping provide essential educational needs such as school uniforms, tuition, books, and other necessities for qualifying students.
Southern Oregon Rotary clubs have a long history of supporting humanitarian projects around the world, including efforts involving medical equipment, transportation, and supplies. This ambulance is another chapter in that tradition—and proof that something no longer needed in one community can become an invaluable resource in another.
A huge THANK YOU to the City of Ashland, everyone who helped make the donation and transportation possible, and the Rotarians who kept this project moving forward.
From Ashland to Cabo—now that is Service Above Self. Amazing work, Rotarians!
