The Rotary Club of Bend has grown its membership by four community-minded leaders recently and continues to welcome central Oregon citizenry interested in service locally and globally under the current club Presidency of Mid-Oregon Credit Union’s Bill Anderson. Club Director and Communications Coordinator Julie Brown did a release on the growth that gained them well-deserved coverage by the local Cascade Business News and on the website of KTVZ-TV of Bend.

At a time when club numbers are down, greatly due to these COVID times, the additions were more than welcomed by the District. Since 1947, The Rotary Club of Bend has been a leading service club in Central Oregon. If interested in learning more about their club, visit them at bendrotary.org and even attend a meeting as they remain on Zoom with so many other clubs well into 2021.

Partnering with the Red Cross, these Rotarians are finding safe ways to contribute, but still remain socially distanced, and protecting members and volunteers. At our third quarterly event, on March 10th, we had 36 units donated from 32 Rotarians and friends. And best of all, this Blood Drive included people representing many different Rotary Clubs here in Jackson County: Medford, Ashland, Rogue Valley After Five, Upper Rogue, Ashland Lithia Springs, and Central Point. One of The Rotary Foundation programs that is popular in our district is called Global Grant Scholars. It replaced the Ambassadorial Scholarship program about eight years ago. This year’s recipient for District 5110, Najibullah Loodin, and next year’s scholar are part of the Water Cooperation and Diplomacy program, which is focused on increasing cooperation between potentially volatile countries in the Aral Sea region of Central Asia.

The program consists of studying with cohorts at three universities. In normal times, the scholar’s study at UPeace in Costa Rica, then move to IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands with studies the last semester at OSU in Oregon. Due to the Corona virus the cohorts had to stay in the Netherlands to finish their studies. Click here to go to the full story on the District 5110 website.
