Rotary 5110 in Action eNews 06-03-2020

Following the cancellation of the planned May 1 District 5110 Club Training Assembly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as District Training Coordinator, I teamed with PDG John Bushnell and DGE Cindi O’Neil, and created a training assembly on a virtual platform. The result was the largest attendance we have ever seen. More that 400 Rotarians registered for the 14 training classes, with many classes being attended by 89, 90 and even 100+ Rotarians – way more than could have been handled in the standard classroom setting.

Testimony from Eva Shimotakahara leading the Coos Bay-North Bend club: “A number of our members attended the online ZOOM and Webinar sessions conducted by District 5110 this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Some of the sessions that these members participated in were grant writing, membership, virtual fundraising, technology, visioning and the Rotary brand. The ideas and comments shared were excellent and those ideas will help us to go forth and succeed as Rotarians in this new age of virtual Rotary. Congratulations and thank you to the organizers and especially to those members who participated from our club.”

On May 27, a new building arrived at Hope Village, in Medford, Oregon. The building was actually two tiny houses joined in one structure. The $20,000 needed to purchase it was raised by donations from members of the Medford Rogue Rotary Club.

Hope Village is operated by Rogue Retreat, whose mission is to address the growing homeless epidemic in Southern Oregon by providing housing and relationship-based case management that helps participants overcome the barriers that keep them from obtaining housing and becoming self-sufficient.

The Jacksonville-Applegate Rotary Club has supported multiple clean water projects in Tanzania over the years. Their most recent project was to provide clean water, toilets, and hand-washing facilities for the kindergarten in Oltepesi Village near Longido. This project is now complete and will greatly improve the health of the local children and the village as a whole. And at this critical time, having hand-washing facilities along with masks will help to prevent the coronavirus from spreading as rapidly. Click here for the website story.
