A Harvest of Hope in Kenya
In the face of devastating floods and unprecedented challenges, the resilient families of the Makena Children’s Foundation in Maraigushu, Kenya, have found a reason to smile. Thanks to the generosity of our community and the proceeds from our Rotary Club’s Crab Crack event, we were able to provide much-needed relief in the form of food and seeds.
Earlier this year, torrential rains wreaked havoc across Kenya, leading to flooding, crop failure, and an increase in hunger among subsistence farmers. Our hearts were heavy as we learned that families were struggling to put even two meals a day on the table, with children going to school on empty stomachs.
But today, hope has been restored. With the $4,000 grant, we purchased food and seeds for 45 families in the Maraigushu village. These seeds represent more than just future crops; they symbolize a new beginning, a fresh start after months of despair. When the rains finally subside, these seeds will help families rebuild their lives and sustain their communities.
Anne Batzer, who left for Kenya on September 4th, shared with us the profound impact this assistance has had. “There were many tears of joy,” she reported. The gratitude from these families is overwhelming. They couldn’t hide their emotions, knowing that they have not been forgotten.
In the attached photo, you can see the smiles of joy and relief as families hold up their seeds and food. This is what Rotary is all about—coming together to make a difference, no matter the distance.
